Hassan Ayariga, the head of the All People’s Congress (ANC), has called Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta the least effective minister in Ghanaian history.

He blamed the weak performance of Ken Ofori-Atta as the finance minister for the local currency’s depreciation.

He claims that because Ofori-Atta invested in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s campaign, Akufo-Addo is incapable of firing him.

Hassan Ayariga declared, “He (Ofori-Atta) is the worst Finance Minister in Ghanaian history because he brought our currency down to become the worst currency in Ghanaian history,” during an appearance on Morning Starr on Monday, December 4, 2023.

“He can’t be fired because he is part of the structure of the government that came to power through any kind of support financially. He acts as President and the President will never fire him because he acts as the President,” he added.

Recall that calls for Ken Ofori-Atta’s resignation regarding the economic downturn were made late last year.

People and public figures, including members of the NPP, demanded that he be removed.

The government has requested a US$3 billion financial bailout program from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) due to the sharp decline in the local economy.

Later, from July 6 to July 13, 2022, an IMF team visited Ghana in order to discuss potential economic support plans with the government.

In December 2022, the Ghanaian government and the IMF reached a staff-level agreement.

Ghana’s $3 billion loan facility was approved by the IMF executive board on May 17, 2023.

The government claims that among many other goals, the IMF program aims to protect debt sustainability and restore macroeconomic stability.
