Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, has advocated for a strong national emphasis on job development as a long-term solution to reduce youth involvement in illicit mining, known locally as galamsey.

The businessman and former Assin Central MP expressed alarm about the widespread environmental harm caused by galamsey activities in the area while speaking with delegates at Amenfi East.

However, he pointed out that since many of the young people involved in the practice are motivated by unemployment and financial difficulties, they shouldn’t be solely blamed.

He claimed that a number of young individuals in the enclave had finished their schooling at different levels but were still unemployed, forcing them to turn to illicit mining in order to make ends meet.

Kennedy Agyapong noted that the young people persisted to perform the dangerous task even though they were aware of the health dangers involved, such as liver and renal problems, because being idle at home frequently exposes them to mockery and a sense of hopelessness.

In order to turn available chances into long-term employment for young people, he emphasized the significance of leadership with great commercial acumen.

He contends that a leader with real-world business expertise is better able to create opportunities for respectable employment, allowing young people to make respectable wages while protecting the environment.

Kennedy Agyapong advocated for the creation of workable solutions that deal with the underlying causes of the issue, like unemployment, rather than just criticizing young people who engage in galamsey.

He emphasized that in order to provide young people with viable alternatives to ecologically harmful behaviors, the nation must prioritize creating jobs.
