At Berekum in the Bono Region on Monday, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s nationwide thank-you tour sparked a confrontation between former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Kwame Baffoe Abronye, the regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono.

On Monday, the former vice president’s tour arrived in the Bono Region, where Abronye serves as regional chairman. Agyapong and Abronye got into a heated argument, which almost ended the meeting.

In his welcome statement, Abronye, who was the first to speak as regional chairman, launched salvos that Kennedy Agyapong later interpreted as being directed at him.

Citing Prof. Mike Ocquaye of the post-election fact-finding committee, the Bono Regional Chairman questioned the sincerity of those advocating for unity within the NPP, arguing that they had previously sowed the seeds of discord within the party with their statements, which the NDC used to campaign against the NPP during the elections.

Kennedy Agyapong also suggested that the party offer amnesty to all suspended and ex-members who had left the party, but Abronye opposed this idea.

According to Abronye, giving such amnesty to those who have received punishment from the party for misbehavior would be a blatant encouragement of indiscipline.

“This party needs discipline and I do not support such a proposal”, Abronye stated.

Abronye claimed that individuals advocating for such unity and amnesty had openly attacked the party in the run-up to the election, which helped it lose.

When it came his turn to speak, Kennedy Agyapong threw his own salvos at Abronye, clearly not happy.

He answered to Abronye with a mix of direct and implied attacks, adamantly declaring that he could not be frightened.

“Some people talk as if they own the party, but they don’t. If we are seeking real men in the party, they don’t measure up. Their financial contribution is minimal. They go around begging yet they have mouths to talk. Even you poor people want to speak your mind, how much more rich men like us. Who born dog!” an angry Kennedy Agyapong said.

Kennedy Agyapong continued his response by criticizing Abronye’s track record as the party’s regional chairman and pointed out that the NPP only had one parliamentary seat in the area.

Abronye previously defended his record as Regional Chairman and the records of his constituency executives, claiming that despite the region’s overwhelming support for the NPP in 2016 and 2020, the NPP government ignored it, as evidenced by the numerous requests from 2017 to 2024 for important projects like roads to be given priority.
