The government would cover the entire cost of the funerals for the 16 people who perished in the recent Okumah boat accident at Kete Krachi in the Oti Region, according to Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
This was revealed by the vice president when she visited the impacted village and spoke with individuals and their families.
“Government will bear the cost of burial of the victims and we will provide rapid support for the survivors,” she said.
Along with advising boat operators and passengers to strictly follow safety protocols in order to prevent similar tragedies, the vice president also distributed more than 600 life jackets and other relief supplies to the populace.
“Family members, Assembly members, our children, what I want to begin by saying is that this tragedy affects every one of us because we have all been struck by it,” she said.

“We would have loved to hear good news all the time, but that is not always the case. So, when things go the other way, we should still give thanks to God. It may be difficult, but sometimes there is nothing we can do.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed the need for vigilance and responsibility among boat operators, noting that many of such accidents could be avoided if safety protocols were observed.

“To those who work on the sea, please wear your life jackets. We plead with you, wear them always. And to our boat operators, we ask that before anyone boards, make sure they have their life jackets on. This simple act can prevent future tragedies,” the vice president stated.
She went on to say that she came there to support the people during their time of loss and to show solidarity, not for political purposes.
We don’t always go out to campaign; occasionally we have to visit our people to learn about their circumstances and the problems they confront. We’re here to support you and to give our condolences,” she stated.
The vice president pledged that more interventions will be implemented to safeguard lives and livelihoods and reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing safety measures along Ghana’s waterways.
