In order to guarantee a resounding first-round victory in the impending 2024 elections, former President John Agyekum Kufuor has issued a rallying call to New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters, asking them to show up in force.

Casting back on the past, Kufuor highlighted the negative effects of voter disinterest and internal party strife, which he feels have cost the NPP dearly in past elections.

Kufuor discussed the effects of party divisions during the 2020 elections in a live broadcast. A few chairmen plotted to remove certain members of parliament, and these individuals ran as independent candidates. It had a big impact on us. We, as a political party, did not benefit from the 18 seats we lost, I believe,” he bemoaned.

The former president used the party’s electoral defeat in 2008 as a warning. “We lost the second round after winning the first. Many people who didn’t vote at the time felt they ought to have, but it was too late. He recounted how NPP members’ lack of interest in voting gave their rivals the advantage, leading to a close loss.

Kufuor also emphasized the NPP’s accomplishments under his leadership while fervently discussing the value of continuity in governance.

In order to dualize the road and build the Nsawam bypass, we obtained an interest-free loan from the Chinese. We made it to Apedwa via the Suhum road. Regretfully, the NDC did little to address the projects we left behind when we lost power.
