Hon. Sam Pyne, the mayor of Kumasi, has praised Bloomberg Philanthropies for their steadfast commitment to supporting road safety in the Kumasi Metropolis. In order to ensure that traffic accidents and fatalities were significantly decreased in the Metropolis and its surrounding municipals, he commended the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) for working with the KMA.

On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, during a courtesy visit from Ms. Rebecca Bavinger of Bloomberg Philanthropies, USA, Hon. Sam Pyne conveyed his gratitude.

Citing Bloomberg’s provision of speed barometers to the MTTD, support for speed awareness campaigns, and engagement and sensitization of the media, police, metro guards, transport unions, and others on road safety and crashes at the local level, he disclosed that the partnership with Bloomberg has played a significant role in addressing road safety issues within the metropolis.

The KMA has finished the Education phase and is moving on to Enforcement, according to Hon. Sam Pyne, who also cited the arrest and prosecution of over 600 offenders in the city thus far.

He mentioned that the KMA was collaborating with several road safety partners, such as Vital Strategies, NRSA, and BRRI, among others, in order to prioritize road safety throughout the city.

On the other hand, Ms. Rebecca Bavinger expressed surprise to learn that the KMA was at the enforcement stage of road safety prioritization, since she believed that other organizations were currently at the education stage.

She said that it was encouraging to learn that their assistance was having a positive impact on the city.

Ms. Bavinger pointed out that the reason for their steadfast support of the city, and therefore of the Mayor, stemmed from the fact that the Mayor was the head of the city’s administration and could interact with the public to resolve issues and advance their standard of living.

Additionally, Ms. Rebecca Bavinger traveled to Kumasi for the Lancaster Hotel Joint Launch of the Kumasi Status Summary Report and Speed Management Plan.
