Information reaching Ghanatodayonline.com from closed and highly reliable sources indicates that former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forestry Commission under the Akufo-Addo administration, Hon. Kwabena Kokofu, has made a sudden political U-turn regarding his ambition in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Hon. Kokofu, who had earlier declared his intention to contest for the party’s General Secretary position, has reportedly withdrawn from that race and is now setting his sights on the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship.
Sources within the party hierarchy reveal that the decision follows intense consultations and strategic considerations, as the General Secretary contest is shaping up to be one of the most competitive battles ahead of the party’s internal elections.
According to insiders, several heavyweight contenders have shown interest in the national slot, creating a crowded and highly competitive field that could make victory difficult for new entrants.
Particularly, the growing influences of the former Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi and the party’s current National Treasurer, Dr. Charles Dwamena, popularly known as Dr. China, are said to be major factors. Dr China and Eugene Antwi, according to inside sources, are very formidable heavyweights in the race which promises to be competitive and interesting.
Faced with this reality, Hon.Kokofu is believed to have redirected his focus to the Ashanti Region, widely considered the electoral stronghold and heartbeat of the NPP.
Party insiders say he is confident that his long-standing service, loyalty, and deep political connections within the region place him in a strong position to clinch the chairmanship slot.
“He believes the Ashanti base knows his contribution to the party and will reward his experience and commitment,” a source close to his camp disclosed.
Political analysts argue that Kokofu’s entry into the regional race could dramatically reshape the contest, as his experiences as a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama and former Chairman of the Bantama Constituency as well as his solid track record in the politics of the Ashanti region make him a formidable contender and a suitable replacement for Chairman Wontumi.
Although an official public announcement is yet to be made, preparations are reportedly underway for a full-scale regional campaign.
