At the Accra Sports Stadium, Asante Kotoko overcame a deficit to defeat Hearts of Oak and win their ninth President’s Cup.
The Porcupine Warriors defeated the Phobians 2-1 on Sunday, July 6, thanks to a late penalty save by Mohammed Camara.
At the Accra Sports Stadium, Hamza Issah opened the score by taking advantage of a howler by Mohammed Camara in the 27th minute.
The ball spilled into an open area where the Hearts attacker tapped into an empty net after Camara mishandled a cross into the box.
Kotoko was second best for the rest of the first half and went into halftime behind by one goal despite chasing the equalizer immediately after giving up.
But shortly after the break, Kotoko struck the back of the net.
It was 1-1 when Peter Amidu Acquah’s run from the left flank before the ball left Konadu Yiadom forced the equalizer.
After drawing level, Kotoko added a second minute later. Following a square pass that left him with an empty net, Kwame Poku came up with a straightforward finish.
In the 74th minute, Poku had a chance to put Kotoko ahead 3-1, but he missed with a low cross from Albert Amoah.
After a score was disallowed for offside, Hearts were given a penalty minutes.
The spot kick that resulted was taken by Emmanuel Amankwah. Camara, the goalie for Kotoko, saved his attempt.
Hearts had late opportunities to tie the score, but each time they fumbled their lines.
At the conclusion of the match, Kotoko won the crucial match and won the President’s Cup once more.
