John Agyekum Kufuor, a former president, has counseled those in positions of authority to always act with accountability and transparency.
He pointed out that this was the sign of effective leadership.
The former president said, “Quality public service that ensured inclusivity and eschewed discrimination in all its forms, was vital to transform society for the better.”
“Quality public service in a democracy such as ours should acknowledge the individual citizen, from whom all power emanates, as the real sovereign authority of the land.”
H.E Kuffour Speaking on the theme of “Maintaining Excellence, Integrity and Service in an Era of Global Instability and Permissiveness” at Valley View University (VVU), in the Greater Accra Region.
At the occasion, four honorary doctorate degrees were awarded to notable African figures by the institution, Ghana’s first private and licensed institution.
It also gave President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo a citation.
President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, former President Kufuor, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, and Chief of Staff of Ghana, Mrs. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, are the recipients of honorary doctorate degrees.
The winners had excelled in their different fields of endeavor and were recognized for their selfless service to the sake of mankind and society.
They have also played a significant role in promoting the advancement of society, notably in the fields of mentoring, good governance, democracy, and youth, women, and child development, as well as in the areas of education, health, and peace-building.
“All the awardees share the distinction of public service with leadership,”.
After being presented with an academic gown and making his address, the former president Kufuor stated, “We all also firmly believe in human dignity.”
He emphasized to African leaders the importance of addressing social concerns and populist expectations in order to promote effective government.
In a time of unpredictability and permissiveness throughout the world, he counseled, “The theme should guide us to retain quality, honesty, and service.
