A violent attack by some town residents prompted the Ghana Police Service to temporarily close the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and remove all of its employees.
The Eastern Regional Police Command said in a statement on Sunday, September 21, 2025, that the decision was taken at the Inspector-General of Police’s request following an enraged group of young people using clubs, stones, and other weapons to attack the station and surrounding barracks.
Bright Kena, also known as D-ball, was arrested for stealing and unlawful entry, and his death was said to have been the catalyst for the unrest. When he passed away, he was being treated at Kukurantumi’s Community Hospital.
The group tried to set the police station on fire at around 7:00 a.m., according to the police. Following their prompt arrival on the scene, a reinforcement squad was able to bring peace and order back.

Since then, the Eastern Regional Police Command has reassured the family and local authorities of a comprehensive investigation. Separate investigations into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death have been launched by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Police Professional Standards Bureau.

Authorities also stated that they are reviewing the attack’s video footage in order to determine who was responsible.

Police have promised to detain and prosecute anyone suspected of being involved in the violence.
