Traders at Kumasi Central Market have threatened to relocate their merchandise to the unfinished market site in the event that the building company is unable to take down all barriers by Sunday, May 19, 2024.

This is a reaction to what the traders describe as protracted hold-ups in the second phase of the market’s conclusion.

The businessmen expressed their displeasure with the Akufo-Addo-led administration in a petition dated Tuesday, May 14, 2024. They cited incompetence and the project’s inability to be completed, which negatively impacted their operations because of improper circumstances.

Due to the revision of a loan arrangement that followed Ghana’s decision to seek a financial bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the project has been on hold for more than a year and a half.

The traders said that the government was not listening to them and was not meeting its completion deadlines.

The traders want to see the project’s development resumed, therefore they have organized a five-day continuous demonstration to urge their demands.

They have given Contracta Construction Company Limited seven days to get rid of any barriers surrounding the property or risk having their occupation terminated.

Per Article 21(1d) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, the traders are also in negotiations with the Ghana Police Service to get authorization for their protest.
