Thomas Ampem Nyarko, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asuogyaman, has urged the administration to organize the distribution of aid supplies to those affected by the Akosombo Dam Spillage.
The legislator said that a centralized strategy for the distribution of aid supplies to the victims will help all impacted areas during his appearance on Morning Starr with Francis Abban.
“Somebody higher will have to do that but that is not what we are seeing. We have been left to fight our fight and so that’s the result of what we are seeing now. Understandably, everybody will want to go where the problem is most serious. So you see everybody directing their support and efforts to the center of the problem,” he said.
“In the heat of this everybody is trying to help their people, so I am doing mine here, Okudzeto is doing his there, and I am sure the DCEs are also doing their part. If the government does not centralize things and coordinate you wouldn’t expect that my colleague Okudzeto will get some items and say this percentage should go to Asuogyaman when all his problems haven’t been solved.
As the spillage of the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam has caused major floods in various communities downstream of the Volta River, potentially accelerating the spread of the disease due to the increased pollution, the prevalence condition in the Asuogyaman district has aroused serious worries.
A full investigation into the flood brought on by the Akosombo Dam spill has been urged by the Minority in Parliament.
They claim that the’man-made’ catastrophe was caused by the Vola River Authority (VRA). He also voiced disappointment with how the VRA was implementing its relief assistance for the populace.
After leading the minority leadership to inspect the affected communities on Friday, October 20, the minority leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, told the media, “We have Saglemi sitting idle; the government must ensure that they house the people of these 11 affected communities for this constituency properly. We are urging them to temporarily connect them to the Saglemi Housing project as a matter of urgency.
“We are disappointed in the Volta River Authority, we believe that their behavior has not been good enough, they have not engaged communities,” the member for Ajuamko Enyan Essiam continued. “We in the NDC, particularly in Parliament, will investigate this matter.”
“We urge the Energy Committee from our side to start the process of instituting a probe into this matter immediately. Aside from this, we also believe that the VRA has not been proactive, after causing this man-made disaster their donations are coming in in trickles. A strong institution such as VRA should have done better what they are doing, we urge them to also start.”
