Renowned Ghanaian gospel artist and founder of the Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away.
He died on 20th January 2026 in Kumasi at the age of 66.
Nana Poku Ashis, his manager, confirmed the news of his death to Ghanatodayonline.com. Additional information regarding his passing has not yet been officially revealed.
His demise occurs just a month after the death of Maame Tiwa, an essential member of Yaw Sarpong’s Asomafo music group, a tragedy that profoundly impacted the gospel music community.
For several years, Yaw Sarpong struggled with health issues, sometimes taking breaks from public appearances to concentrate on his treatment and recovery.
Considered one of the most impactful personalities in Ghana’s gospel music scene, Yaw Sarpong gained national fame as the head of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, a band that defined the style and framework of contemporary Akan gospel music.
The ensemble gained recognition for its profound lyrical substance and structured musical approach based on Christian beliefs.
Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo have created numerous legendary gospel songs over the years, such as Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, many of which continue to be essential in churches throughout Ghana.
In 2025, Yaw Sarpong received the Lifetime Achievement award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
