The increased violence in Bawku has been sharply denounced by President John Dramani Mahama, who has expressed concern over the ongoing turmoil and hope that peace would soon be restored through mediation efforts headed by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The most recent round of violence broke out on Thursday, April 10, after skirmishes between local youth and police forces left multiple people dead or seriously injured.
In a concerning development, during the commotion, Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku, reportedly had his own home set on fire.
President Mahama underlined the pressing need to bring peace back to the conflict-prone region during his remarks at the Ghana Military Academy’s Graduation Parade earlier today.
He restated his dedication to national security and peace in Bawku.
He also praised the Asantehene’s leadership of the current peace process and expressed faith in Otumfuo’s ability to mediate a durable settlement to the protracted dispute.
