Ghanaians are becoming increasingly concerned about political polarization, with experts cautioning that growing mistrust among party followers could erode democratic culture.
In his New Year’s address, President John Dramani Mahama called for an end to polarizing politics and urged citizens and political players to prioritize nation-building over partisanship.
“There is no NPP Ghana. There is no CPP Ghana or NDC Ghana. There is only one Ghana,” he said.
President Mahama warned that political divisions distract from urgent national challenges such as unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and healthcare access, and called for what he described as “the patriotism of nation-building.”
“Let us reject the politics of division and embrace the patriotism of nation-building. Let us disagree without being disagreeable. Let us compete in the marketplace of ideas without treating our opponents as enemies.”
Although Ghana has long been known for its smooth political transitions, polarization has increased in recent election cycles. According to President Mahama, democracy functions best when national unity is not threatened by party rivalry.
