“Leadership” is the theme of MTN Ghana’s celebration of the International Day of Girls in ICT.
This year, the importance of strong female role models in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields is the primary focus of discussion.
Every year on April 25, ITU Member States promote the International Day of Girls in ICT, an effort that encourages young women and girls to seek employment in the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector.
This year, MTN Ghana invited ICT students from Aburi Girls SHS at the MTN House for a facilities tour and an opportunity to connect with female engineers in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization. Additionally, to encourage females at junior high schools in and around the Agbogba neighborhood to pursue STEM jobs, the MTN Ghana Foundation will collaborate with Mobile Web Ghana, an ICT startup.
MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, thanked Ghanaian women and organizations for supporting girls’ access to ICT.
She urged Corporate Ghana to be involved in the drive to increase the number of women in STEM and ICT fields. She underlined MTN Ghana’s dedication to making sure that women and girls have equal opportunity to engage in the digital economy, emphasizing the need of giving females equal access to digital education and training in order to build a strong digital future.
For a number of years, MTN Ghana has supported females in ICT in schools of all levels as well as in colleges and universities. Over 8,000 girls in Ghana have benefited from the company’s GHs 12.6 million investment in the Girls in ICT project, which is run by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization.
In an effort to bridge the digital gap, the MTN Ghana Foundation has also created robotics and ICT facilities in partnership with organizations and local communities. At a cost of GHC2,280,489, the MTN Ghana Foundation recently gave the Mamfe Methodist Girls SHS access to a state-of-the-art robotics center.
The building has a 100-seat robotics practice and training hall, a research area furnished with computers for students and teachers, robotics tools and furnishings, and internet connectivity. For girls enrolled in basic and senior high schools, MTN Ghana Foundation also offers instruction and coding workshops.
The Foundation intends to equip young people for new career prospects by concentrating primarily on digital skills training and facilitation.
