“I suggested that we have a national discussion on the Free SHS programme where various stakeholders and experts will share ideas about how to improve on the programme, but the Akufo-Addo government declined and we are all witnesses to what our students are going through at the Senior High Schools” former president John Dramani Mahama tells government.

John Dramani Mahama, a former president and potential presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced concern about the subpar food being provided in the nation’s senior high schools.

He claims that because of the bad quality of the food, the pupils are becoming very thin and appear undernourished.

On March 29, 2023, during a speech to party members and guests in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa Constituency in the Central Region, Mr. Mahama claimed that the Free Senior High School initiative was not being carried out as intended.

Today, even dogs in their homes won’t be given food of such bad quality, if you look at the food being served to the pupils. Excuse me. They’re very thin when they get home from school. Due to a shortage of space, students are crammed into their dorm rooms. If you don’t disinfect their belongings, you’ll end up having a lot of bedbugs in your house.

The ex-President stated that the Free SHS program has done more damage to the students than good, and he promised that if he were elected president, he would ensure that the Free SHS’s dining system would be dispersed to guarantee that the students received nutritious food.

According to Mr. Mahama, Nana Akufo-Addo’s education system was horribly mishandled; as a result, changes must be implemented by a new administration to put the education sector back on track.
