The Ministry of Finance has been instructed by President John Dramani Mahama to release GH¢1 billion to pay contractors that the state has owed since 2017. The payment is anticipated to be made before Christmas.
During a sod-cutting ceremony for the Sunyani–Atronie–Acherensua Road Project in the Bono Region, which is part of the government’s Big Push initiative, the President made the announcement on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
President Mahama claims that the payment will cover unfinished certified work completed by contractors throughout the years. According to him, continuous audits will direct the procedure to guarantee that only validated claims are reimbursed.
“I have directed the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato GForson, to release GH¢1 billion to settle debts owed to contractors since 2017 before Christmas,” the President said. “All the contractors will be paid, and the families of deceased contractors should also come forward to receive the money.”
He urged contractors to submit their documents quickly to avoid delays in payment. “I want to encourage contractors to hurry up with their certificates to receive your money. Your money will only be delayed if you are lazy,” he added.
According to President Mahama, money has been allocated under the Big Push program to resuscitate and finish infrastructure projects that had stalled nationwide.
Speaking at the event, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr. Agyemang Badu II, the Dormaahene, warned contractors against doing subpar work and urged the government to impose stringent oversight to guarantee high-quality work production.
President Mahama reiterated his government’s resolve to paying long-standing contractor arrears and reviving shelved projects across the country, characterizing the Sunyani–Atronie–Acherensua Road Project as an important development for the Bono Region.
