Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has been given a two-year contract extension by President John Mahama, enabling him to manage the Ghana Police Service over his mandatory retirement age in December 2025.
The Police Council’s proposal was followed by the decision, which was announced in a formal letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.
The letter states that the re-engagement will begin on December 28, 2025, during which time Mr. Yohuno will continue to serve as IGP and carry out all responsibilities related to the position.
According to the presidency, the extension is required to guarantee stability, continuity, and the consolidation of existing changes inside the Service.
“The President’s decision reflects the Council’s firm conviction that your continued leadership is essential to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period,” the letter stated.
Within three days after receiving the message, the Inspector-General is required to provide written confirmation of his acceptance of the renewed appointment.
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was replaced by Mr. Yohuno, who was sworn in a day after President Mahama named him IGP on March 13, 2025, after consulting with the Council of State.
Prior to his appointment, he worked for former President Nana Akufo-Addo as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, a position he took on in July 2024.
If approved, the extension will put him in control until 2027, which is anticipated to be a critical time for institutional reform and law enforcement stability.
