Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of operations, has reiterated the government’s steadfast dedication to protecting everyone’s democratic rights and freedoms, especially the freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest.

He made this statement on Monday, May 5, when protesters from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties demonstrated and sent a petition to the Jubilee House against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s suspension.

Mr. Dogbe, who received the petition from the coalition on behalf of the president, emphasized recent protests that took place around the nation and pointed out that people had exercised their rights without interference from the government.

He emphasized that the government will keep promoting an atmosphere where these liberties are valued and safeguarded under President John Mahama’s administration.

“I can assure you, and the people of Ghana, that we appreciate the fact that just as the government ensured you went about your demonstration peacefully, there was another one last weekend that also took place without any attempt to prevent people from expressing themselves,” Mr Dogbe stated.

He highlighted this as a clear indication of the government’s democratic posture, which is a departure from the previous administration.

“We will continue to allow for peaceful expression in this country under President Mahama. Nobody is going to inhibit or stop anyone from doing that,” he said.

Mr. Dogbe added that President Mahama has shown a strong commitment to preserving and advancing the country’s democracy in less than 120 days in office.

“That should tell you that President Mahama, in less than 120 days, has shown how he is going to preserve and grow the democracy of Ghana,” he added.
