As part of his administration’s larger effort to revolutionize agriculture and bolster Ghana’s economic resiliency, President John Dramani Mahama has introduced the “Feed Ghana Programme.”

Speaking at the program’s launch in Techiman on Saturday, April 12, Mr. Mahama underlined the necessity of taking decisive and audacious action to put agriculture back at the center of Ghana’s development agenda.

“Mr. Chairman, the time has come for bold and decisive actions. We must no longer treat agriculture as an afterthought. Agriculture must be placed at the center of our national economic transformation,” he said.

He clarified that the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA), a broader approach, is built upon the Feed Ghana Program. In order to generate employment, lower food inflation, and guarantee long-term food security, this strategy aims to modernize and grow the agricultural industry.

Mr. Mahama claims that the program will act as a broad framework for the execution of all agricultural initiatives and interventions. Increasing food production, encouraging contemporary farming methods, enhancing agricultural infrastructure, and creating agro-industrial zones around the nation are its main objectives.

He also discussed the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects on the world, cautioning that increasing trade tensions and growing protectionism need for a reevaluation of national food policies.

“Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has shifted. Global protectionism is rising. Tariff wars are being waged among the world powers, and new trade tensions are emerging between nations,” he stated.

Mr. Mahama emphasised that the Feed Ghana Programme is a sign of his government’s intention to invest in the nation’s agricultural potential and is also timely.

He said “It represents a bold commitment to put our resources where our ambitions lie.”
