The National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation have been instructed by President John Dramani Mahama to promptly restore the transmission of sixty-four radio stations that were recently shut down owing to regulatory concerns.

Concerns that limiting radio operations before their authorization is regularized could impede media freedom have led to the decision.

Due to many regulatory violations, the NCA had mandated the immediate suspension of operations for over 60 FM broadcasting stations nationwide, including well-known stations like Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM.

However, in a statement released on Thursday, June 12, President Mahama emphasized the significance of striking a balance between free speech rights and compliance, and he urged authorities to take a more lenient stance.

“The President believes regulatory compliance must take into account the need to uphold and enhance media freedom,” Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications and the President’s spokesperson, said.

President Mahama gave the Minister instructions to work with the NCA to establish a fair timeline for the impacted stations to finish the required regularization procedures in order to guarantee a seamless transition.
