To stop the startling increase in fire incidents nationwide, President John Dramani Mahama has demanded immediate improvements to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Speaking to recently appointed security chiefs, he emphasized the terrible toll that fires take on people’s lives, companies, and vital infrastructure.
According to him, there were 6,436 fire occurrences in Ghana last year, which resulted in the loss of livelihoods, property, and, in some terrible cases, lives. In order to prevent these tragedies and maintain public safety, the president emphasized the importance of having a fire department that is well-equipped, proactive, and responsive.
President Mahama gave the new Chief Fire Officer a list of goals, which included stricter enforcement of fire safety laws, improved emergency response preparedness, and increased public education on fire prevention. He underlined that in order to stop preventable fatalities, safety regulations must be strictly followed and fire audits must be successful.
The President pledged money to upgrade firefighting infrastructure and enhance officer welfare, assuring the GNFS of complete government support. He reiterated that all necessary projects to fortify the fire service will be finished, as stated in the 2025 budget.
In order to guarantee that the Ghana National Fire Service satisfies the needs of a fast expanding and urbanizing country, President Mahama asked the new leadership to act decisively.
