Ghana’s increasing social and economic problems would be addressed by a new administration led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to party presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama.

He promised to name the “leanest and most efficient” administration under Ghana’s Fourth Republic within the first ninety days and to submit his whole cabinet for legislative confirmation within fourteen days.

The former president stated his desire to address the economic issues, which he feels were poorly handled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and resulted in widespread suffering.

“The NDC plans to prepare a home-grown fiscal consolidation programme to guide its administration’s first budget if elected,” he said.

Mr. Mahama presented his “first 120 days social contract with the people of Ghana,” which includes a proposal to handle the economy through a National Economic Dialogue, during a crowded rally in GbetsIle, in the Kpone Katamanso constituency, last Thursday.

On Thursday, Mr. Mahama started a two-day campaign trip of the Greater Accra Region, stopping in Tema Central, Kpone Katamanso, Old Ningo in the Ningo-Prampram and Tema East constituency.

In reference to illicit mining, Mr. Mahama said he would deal with the matter as president, but he emphasized that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was already in charge of it.

“You are currently the president of Ghana, and it is your responsibility to deal with galamsey now. After January 7, 2025, when Ghanaians have elected me, I will take responsibility and sort out illegal mining,” he said at a rally in Ningo Prampram.

Mr. Mahama’s remarks came after President Akufo-Addo asked him to make clear where he stood on galamsey.

“It looks like he doesn’t live in this country because I have commented on galamsey extensively. The University of Energy and Natural Resources gave leaders a platform to outline their small-scale mining policy. I outlined NDC’s policy and answered questions for two hours,” he stated.

In order to ensure a brighter future for Ghana’s young, Mr. Mahama emphasized the importance of the approaching elections on December 7 and urged voters to view the election as a chance for significant change that would influence the country’s future for many generations.

He advised party members to be on guard and expressed confidence in the party’s chances of winning the upcoming election.
