John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed the party’s pledge to vote in peaceful elections on December 7, 2024.

In a meeting with a West African Elders Forum delegation led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday, October 7, 2024, Mr. Mahama emphasized that close cooperation between the Electoral Commission (EC) and political stakeholders is necessary to guarantee a transparent electoral process.

Fresh off a campaign visit in the Savannah Region, Mr. Mahama commended the work of the West African Elders Forum in fostering regional peace and averting violence stemming from elections.

Using his experience as the Forum’s mission leader during Nigeria’s recent elections, he emphasized the Forum’s vital role in maintaining political stability.

“Since 2020, the Forum has been working to help prevent conflict arising mainly from elections in the subregion. This initiative is commendable and very useful, and I had the privilege of leading the Forum’s mission to the recent Nigerian election,” he stated.

The former president emphasized that the EC and other relevant authorities, in addition to the political parties, bear responsibility for holding free and fair elections.

In the lead-up to the general elections, he encouraged stakeholders to put fairness first and demanded increased transparency.
