As part of continuing talks over security sector changes under his administration, President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

On Friday, March 14, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno will be sworn in as the next IGP, following his appointment.

Although Dr. Akuffo Dampare’s termination has not been officially explained, signs indicate that it is a component of a larger restructuring initiative inside the Ghana Police Service.

Since his appointment as IGP in 2021, Dr. Akuffo Dampare has been well-known for leading important policing changes, such as internal punishment procedures and community involvement programs.

“President John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police. He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu wrote.

COP Yohuno brings forty years of expertise to the role of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and restructuring of the Ghana Police Service.

Meanwhile, Imani Ghana and security expert Professor Kwesi Aning have jointly filed a suit at the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the President from removing the Inspector-General of Police and some other heads of the security agencies until an ongoing case relating to the matter is decided by the court in May 2025.

The petitioner claims that removing the aforementioned security heads before the Supreme Court hears the case would be unfair treatment.

The development follows intense rumors that the President plans to fire the head of security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police.
