The Ghanaian government has declared that post-retirement contract appointments for retired public servants will be immediately suspended.

An official statement signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, stated this directive. The announcement states that all requests for these kinds of appointments would no longer be taken into account.

The action is a part of the government’s efforts to streamline employment in the public sector and open doors for younger professionals in the civil and public service fields.

According to the announcement, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and other public sector organizations have been asked to comply with the decision, which goes into force immediately.

Although no particular explanation was provided for the abrupt change in policy, it is anticipated that the suspension will have an effect on a number of organizations that customarily depend on the experience of retired professionals through contract extensions.

Though it may also raise worries about the possible loss of institutional memory and experienced leadership in some crucial sectors, analysts think this decision could herald a renewed focus on youth employment and succession planning within the public sector.
