Ghanaians have been urged by President John Dramani Mahama to assist the nation’s poultry industry by choosing locally produced chicken over imported alternatives.

President Mahama voiced concern over the poor patronage of local poultry during the “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” Poultry Initiative launch in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, on Wednesday.

“The ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ initiative represents more than poultry production; it embodies the spirit of renewal and self-belief. Let’s take pride in producing what we eat and eat what we make. After the processing chicken, the branding will be done properly for markets and stores. Please buy stamped Ghana chicken and stop patronising imported chicken,” President Mahama advised.

President Mahama also ordered Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to release an extra GHC200 million to buy excess rice and maize from farmers impacted by the country’s food glut.

The previous GHC100 million release, which was insufficient to stabilize the market, followed by this action.

The President’s declaration coincides with farmers’ mounting concerns, especially in the areas of rice, chicken, and maize, where an excess of output has made it difficult to sell their produce.
