Majority asks Speaker to declare Kpandai seat vacant

The Majority in Parliament has called on the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, to declare the Kpandai seat vacant after the Tamale High Court nullified the constituency’s 2024 parliamentary election results.

Kpandai MP Matthew Nyindam is required by the caucus to abstain from legislative duties until the election rerun is finished.

They contend that Nyindam should no longer take part in House proceedings since both the MP and Parliament have been officially served with the court’s decision mandating a new election after a legal challenge.

Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip, made reference to previous incidents while speaking on the floor of Parliament and demanded that the MP be expelled.

“Mr. Speaker, I’m not raising these matters whimsically because precedent will guide us. Mr Speaker, when the Honourable Gyakye Quayson was ordered by the court that he should go through re-run, Members of this side at the time, mainly led by the now Minority Leader, spoke vociferously against the fact that the Honourable Gyakye Quayson cannot be entertained in this house.

“Eventually, he had to leave. This is a path that we have travelled. Precedent has been set and laid. Nobody can tell us in this house today that the Honourable Nyindam must have a voice today. It won’t happen,” he stated.

The Minority has promised to oppose any effort to prevent Nyindam from serving as a representative for his constituency.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin told the media on Wednesday, November 26, that the caucus would oppose any attempt to remove Nyindam from Parliament before all legal procedures have been completed.
