The Parliamentary Sanitation Committee has not been given permission by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus to meddle in issues concerning the Youth Employment Agency’s (YEA) sanitation contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the NDC has confirmed.
No member of the Sanitation Committee has been required to interfere in the YEA’s contractual decisions, the Caucus emphasized in a statement issued by Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business.
“The Chairman of the Committee has reported to me that, contrary to media reports, neither he nor any committee member has attempted to interfere in the work of the YEA regarding the Zoomlion sanitation contract,” Ayariga stated.
He added that the YEA and the public should ignore any statements made by individual committee members that seem to support Zoomlion’s contract with the YEA, emphasizing that such statements do not represent the Committee’s or Parliament’s official stance.
Additionally, the Majority Leader counseled Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to oppose any pressure or intimidation to sign sanitation contracts with certain businesses.
He noted that Parliament had given the Assemblies control over their development priorities by ensuring that 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund was distributed directly to them, as per a direction from President John Dramani Mahama during the previous session.
Mr. Ayariga warned against any undue influence in local authorities’ contractual decisions and reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to maintaining their independence.
