Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader in parliament, has demanded that the Volta River Authority (VRA) management come before the House to respond to inquiries about the Akosombo dam spill and its aftermath.

He claimed that by doing this, it would be possible to resolve some unanswered issues and figure out how to stop similar incidents from happening in the future.

On September 15, 2023, the VRA started releasing regulated water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams as a result of a steady increase in the Akosombo reservoir’s water level and inflow pattern.

The spillage caused thousands of people’s homes in Asuogyaman, Central Tongu, North Tongu, South Tongu, and several other locations to be swamped.

On Tuesday, the authorities declared the end of the Akosombo dam’s controlled spill.

Tuesday, during a floor speech in parliament, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated, “I believe we may need to find some answers to some questions, and I guess the speaker is not yet here, but when the speaker comes, we will have some discussions with him, and I believe it will be important for us to invite VRA to come and fully brief the house about what has happened, the repercussions, and how to avoid any future events.”

The nation is still coping with the fallout from the Akosombo dam spill, which is why the Majority Leader made this plea.

There are worries about the long-term effects of the spillover on the environment and the economy, and many displaced residents are still finding it difficult to restore their lives.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) is being urged by the Minority in Parliament to assume the duty of constructing temporary pavilions for students impacted by the overflow of water from the Akosombo Dam.

Over 14,000 pupils have had their academic activities delayed as a result of the situation, according to information from the North Tongu Education Directorate. This is because different classrooms are being used as safe havens for impacted citizens.
