The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has once again demanded that the decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo be reviewed.

In honor of three High Court judges who were kidnapped and killed on June 30, 1982, Justices Frederick Opoku Sarkodie, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong, the request was made during the 43rd Martyrs’ Day commemoration.

Their murder is generally regarded as a needless act of violence with political motivations.

Effua Ghartey, President of the GBA, spoke at the ceremony and raised concern about the Chief Justice’s suspension, cautioning that it would create a risky precedent for the nation’s judicial system.

She emphasized the need to preserve the independence and integrity of Ghana’s legal system and advocated for a reconsideration of the ruling.

“In the spirit of reconciliation, all the various calls made for a reconsideration of the suspension of the Chief Justice in the circumstances, as it sets a poor precedent, will not go unheeded. We yearn for peace and strive for peace,” she stated.
