Hon. Daniel Kwaku Mensah, DKM, the Ashanti regional representative hopeful for the National Association of Local Authority of Ghana (NALAG) and Assembly member for the Moseaso electoral area in the Amansie west district of the Ashanti region, who is also an expert in small-scale mining, has proposed that instead of using military personnel to combat illegal mining on river bodies.

The government and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources should stop importing any equipment used for mining on river bodies.

Among them is Chanfan’s entry into the nation.

He claims that it is evident that unlawful mining operations are destroying our water sources, including the rivers Ankobra, Offin, Pra, and Densu, and producing nuisances.

He stated that police officials at different security checkpoints should be authorized to detain people who are carrying such devices to different mining areas and burn them all when the government forbids their importation.

Speaking with Kumasi-based media professionals, Hon. Daniel Kwaku Mensah expressed his belief that preventing the entry of these specific machines into the nation is necessary since attacking is the greatest form of defense.

Nonetheless, he urged traditional leaders and the leadership of the Small Scale Mining Association to work together to destroy the equipment that those illicit miners in their communities were using.
