Due to maintenance being done by gas suppliers to enhance the nation’s energy supply, Ghanaians can anticipate a nationwide power outage on Sunday, July 13.

The 161 kilovolt Anwomaso to Kumasi transmission line reconstruction will begin with a groundbreaking ceremony announced by John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition.

The stoppage, he continued, is required to enable ENI, one of Ghana’s major gas producers, to temporarily close gas valves for repairs that will eventually assist boost gas output.

Although Mr. Jinapor acknowledged that there would be some difficulty from the scheduled shutdown, he reassured the public that it will ultimately enhance the national grid.

“Because the plant will be turned off for a short period within the day for maintenance works, we are likely to experience some interruption of power. It is for a good purpose,” he said.

The Energy Minister also disclosed that ENI has made a new oil discovery and that Tullow Oil is looking to expand its investment in Ghana’s petroleum sector. In the meantime, the new Anwomaso to Kumasi transmission line, funded by the European Union and the Government of France, is expected to help solve low voltage issues and boost power efficiency in Kumasi and nearby mining communities like Dunkwa.

Mr. Jinapor promised that the ministry has consulted experts and decided not to run thermal plants on liquid fuel during the brief shutdown because this would not be technically or financially feasible.

Mr. Jinapor urged the public to endure the brief inconvenience for the sake of the country’s long-term energy security, promising that every effort is being made to lessen the impact of the power outage on households and businesses.
