The minority did not attend yesterday’s meetings of the Parliamentary appointments committee.

The walkout occurred during the latter stages of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s vetting as minister designate for foreign affairs.

The minority leader asked the committee to halt its work after devoting over five hours to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister designate for Foreign Affairs.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, ordered the Appointments Committee to be reorganized due to the disorderly procedures the previous day, which prompted the Effutu MP to offer a prayer.

The Parliamentary Appointments Committee meetings yesterday were not attended by the minority.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was being vetted as the minister designate for foreign affairs when the walkout took place.

After spending more than five hours with Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister designate for Foreign Affairs, the minority leader requested that the committee stop working.

The Effutu MP offered a prayer after Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin ordered the Appointments Committee to be restructured because of the chaotic procedures the day before.

The committee chairman rejected deputy minority Chief Whip Habib Iddrissu’s attempt to play the speaker’s audio on the subject. Bernard Ahiafor, the committee’s chairman, decided that the proceedings should go on as a result.

Citing the speaker’s order, Ranking Member Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin chose to abstain from the proceedings. As a result of the situation, minority members including Afenyo-Markin left, never to return, and candidate Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was discharged.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the minister of state designate in charge of government communications, was one of the numerous other applicants that the Committee went on to vet.

Regardless of the minority’s absence, all ten of the nominees vetted for the day including Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa have been unanimously recommended for approval.
