For the fourth time, the minority caucus in parliament has chosen to abstain from house proceedings.

On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, they left the house to go to court to defend their fellow MP Gyakye Quayson, who is being tried for perjury.

Recently, the MP for Bole, Mr. Yusif Sulemana, stated that he would continue to neglect the business of the house in favor of his colleagues in court until the minority caucus leadership whips his aisle in line against boycotting parliamentary sessions on the court days of his fellow opposition MPs.

On Friday, July 14, 2023, he went to court with his fellow minority MPs to defend the MP for Assin North.

The minority caucus is continuing its boycott despite Speaker Alban Bagbin’s order that it notify his office in writing of its intentions.

As Mr. Sulemana left the room and was questioned by media if he was boycotting Friday’s meeting, the Bole MP replied, “If that’s how you want to describe it, that’s fine.”

“We are going to court”, he said.

Mr. Sulemana in response to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s order that MPs from the minority caucus be marked absent if they skip out on the proceedings of the house without a formal notice: “All I know is that I’m going to court to, as it were, solidarise with my colleague and that’s the most important thing for me now.”

“Whether I’m marked present or absent is another subject that needs to be discussed, but for the time being, the party and the caucus have decided that we must be in court, and I’m headed there. That’s all there is to it, he said.

On Tuesday, the majority of lawmakers were notably absent from the floor even over an hour after the bell in Parliament rang to signal the start of the session.

Only 13 members of the New Patriotic Party were present on the floor when the sitting started.

Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, made a request to the Speaker to guarantee that questions raised and answered in the absence of NDC MPs that were recorded in their names.
