The Minority Caucus in Parliament has donated GHC200,000 to assist impacted traders in the wake of the recent fire breakout at Kumasi’s Adum Blue Light Market.
At a brief ceremony in Kumasi, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin gave the money and sent his deepest sympathies to the traders who lost their livelihoods and possessions in the catastrophic fire.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin urged the government to intervene with more aid, as it has done in previous catastrophe situations.
In particular, he suggested that money from the Contingency Fund be used to help the sufferers get better right now.
“The government must show the same level of urgency and compassion as it has in other similar tragedies,” he highlighted.
The market traders’ chairman, Mr. Joseph Bobie Ansah, accepted the donation on behalf of the impacted merchants and expressed gratitude to the Minority Caucus for their prompt action and support during this trying time.
“We sincerely appreciate this assistance.
For our members who have lost everything, it will significantly lessen their burden,” Mr. Ansah stated.
Many people have praised the Minority Caucus’ act as an expression of solidarity and care for regular Ghanaians during difficult times.
