The comments of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister-designate, during his vetting on Monday, January 13, have drawn criticism from the Minority.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North Dr. Gideon Boako, speaking at a news conference, voiced concerns about Dr. Forson’s proposals to solve revenue deficits, calling his answers vague and unpersuasive.

Dr. Boako emphasized that the Minister-designate has not made it clear how he plans to close the revenue gaps without adding to Ghanaians’ financial responsibilities.

“The Minister Designate’s unconvincing responses regarding how he intends to make up for the revenue shortfalls leave us with no choice but to think that he will scrap these taxes but introduce new ones, perhaps more draconian than those he would scrap,” Dr Boako stated.

Such a move would be like to giving with one hand and taking with the other, he emphasized.

By bringing out contradictions in Dr. Forson’s answers, the Minority also questioned his credibility. Dr. Forson was charged throughout the vetting process of utilizing false information to support his assertions on the 2016 fiscal deficit.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) figures, which put the deficit at 6.3%, contradicted the 6.1% figure he had first provided, which he claimed was charitable. “Can a Minister boldly claim he was charitable in presenting incorrect figures?” Dr. Boako said in his critique of this method fascinating.
