Plans to hold a second protest to seek the resignation of Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr. Ernest Addison and his two deputies have been alluded to by the Minority caucus in Parliament.

Insiders close to the caucus for Ghanatodayonline.com assert that it is critical the governor who oversaw “a great mess at the Central Bank is replaced with a more competent person.”

On October 3, 2023, caucus members held a demonstration demanding the resignation of BoG’s governor and deputies after the Bank announced a GH¢60.81 billion deficit for the fiscal year 2022 and then set aside more than $250 million for the building of a new headquarters.

The protesters began at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle’s Obra Spot and marched to the National Theatre traffic light, the Ridge Roundabout, the High Court Complex traffic light, the Attah Mills Highway, and subsequently, they made a U-turn at the National Lottery Authority. Finally, they ended at Independence Square, where the leadership went to deliver a petition to the governor, who declined to meet with them in person and sent his head of security in their place.

After the protest proved unsuccessful, efforts were launched to set a new date that was postponed for almost a year.

However, Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central, submitted a Right to Information Act (RTI) request, seeking details on the GHS 70 billion in total losses stated in the BoG’s 2022 and 2023 financial accounts.

He also wanted details on the more than GH¢250 million spent on the BoG’s new headquarters and the clinic that is being built.

According to sources close to Ghanatodayonline.com, the legislator from Bawku Central will spearhead the demonstration following receipt of the required approval and authorization from law enforcement.
