“Misinformation, whether intentional or inadvertent, from these individuals because they are influential poses a significant threat to Ghana’s stability” according to the National Security Minister.
Albert Kan Dapaah, the minister of national security, has accused some people in the media, civil society, and academics of intentionally using their positions of power to support a coup and destabilize the nation.
He characterized the pattern as alarming and a danger to the nation’s democracy.
The minister claims that as the country gets closer to the 2024 elections, not only security personnel but also all residents should be extremely concerned about the trend.
“In Ghana, a more disconcerting trend is also emerging. Notably following the coup in Niger, certain individuals in academia, civil society and the media, from what I have observed have been propagating false narratives in support of a coup or military rule.
“These actors have gained substantial followings on social media leveraging the influence to disseminate misinformation that threatens our nation’s peace and also stability, especially as we approach the critical December 2024 general election,” Mr Dapaah said.
He emphasized how their political criticism damages the public’s confidence in crucial institutions like the judiciary and the electoral commission. This, according to him, “can be very dangerous and potentially, they can steer our country towards a perilous path.”
He claimed that the false information spread by the individuals he named can persuade voters to take actions against their best interests and that this could lead to “the election of a bad leader and opting for a bad public policy, all of which can have grave consequences for the survival of a State.”
Therefore, Mr. Dapaah advised the Ghanaian society to unite in order to silence such views.
