Eric Opoku, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, has stated that beginning in 2026, the Ministry will only provide farmers with seeds that are sourced locally.
The revelation, which was made on Monday, November 24, during the Government Accountability Series, represents a significant advancement in the nation’s quest for food sovereignty.
Minister Opoku claims that the government’s long-term plan for national food security is in line with the choice to give local seed source first priority.
“Without food sovereignty, there can never be food security. We recognise the immense potential of our research institutions in seed research, development, and testing,” the Minister said.
He emphasized the value of working with local research organizations to create and supply premium seeds that are suited to Ghanaian farmers’ requirements.
A key component of the Ministry’s larger agriculture strategy to lessen the nation’s dependency on imported seeds is this audacious endeavor. It is anticipated that the action will boost domestic agricultural output, encourage sustainable farming methods, and support Ghana’s economic expansion.
In addition to reducing reliance on imports, the move to locally sourced seeds is a calculated move to strengthen regional agricultural research organizations.
Minister Opoku emphasized how important these organizations are to the research, testing, and enhancement of seeds. He reaffirmed, “We will work closely with our research bodies to ensure that the seeds we provide meet the high standards required by our farmers.”
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) is promoting native seed types to stimulate innovation, improve food security, and boost the sustainability of Ghana’s agricultural sector. In order to encourage resilient farming techniques that increase yields and support long-term food sustainability, MOFA will work with research groups to establish programs that educate farmers about the advantages of locally produced seeds over the course of the upcoming year.
