The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will not see Mohammed Kudus, a midfielder for West Ham United, attend the Black Stars’ training camp in Kumasi. Kudus is currently in Ghana.

Nonetheless, the 23-year-old player is anticipated to travel with the team on Wednesday, January 10, when they depart from Accra for Cote D’Ivoire.

During Ghana’s recent friendly match against Namibia at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, which ended in a scoreless draw, Kudus was conspicuously absent. This warm-up match was between Namibia and the Black Stars. Namibia will play South Africa, Mali, and Tunisia in Group E at the AFCON.

The 23-year-old was, however, accompanied by a medical team member, possibly a physiotherapist, from his club West Ham United.

Henry Asante Twum, the director of communications for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), confirmed Kudus’ arrival in Ghana and refuted rumors that he might not play in the upcoming competition, which is set to take place from January 13 to February 11.

When announcing the 27-man Black Stars squad for the 2023 AFCON, Head Coach Chris Hughton mentioned a “slight injury” as the reason why former Ajax Amsterdam player Kudus was not on the team during training.

Ghana is placed in Group B of the AFCON, with Mozambique, Egypt, and Cape Verde. The Black Stars are hopeful about Kudus’ inclusion as they prepare for the continental football extravaganza, despite his tardy arrival to the training camp.
