Speaker Alban Bagbin voiced his displeasure with recent misconduct and unruly conduct among Members of Parliament (MPs) at the start of the current parliamentary session.
He emphasized that such acts undermined the House’s efficacy and degraded its dignity.
The Speaker reiterated that the purpose of parliamentary privilege was to safeguard Parliament’s independence, not to grant immunity from legitimate inquiries or legal actions.
He made it clear that MPs were subject to the law and that their privileges did not absolve them of responsibility.
He said that any wrongdoing would be dealt with appropriately and warned that the House will no longer put up with chaos, absence, or procedural shortcuts.
The speaker also mentioned that law enforcement organizations are increasingly requesting information on MPs’ concerning behavior. He cautioned House members that they were expected to respect investigations and legal procedures.
“The House is committed to upholding discipline, integrity, and accountability, and will ensure that Members adhere to rules and lawful conduct to restore public trust in the institution,” he stated in a clear and concise message.
