Thirty-three (33) former Trokosi girls who completed their education at the Baptist Vocational Training Center in Frankadua, Eastern Region, have received assistance from the MTN Ghana Foundation.

Certificates in cosmetology, hair styling, dressmaking, and catering were given to the recipients. The MTN Ghana Foundation funded their training and gave them seed money and equipment to get started, including as gas cylinders, ovens, sewing machines, fabrics, sewing kits, hair dryers, sinks for washing, hair relaxers, towels, roller stands, and hair products. The goal of this assistance is to allow the graduates to launch their firms right away.

MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, provided the following explanation for the investment: “We hope that our support will aid in their reintegration into society, reduce their dependency on their families and ultimately help them break the cycle of poverty.  She further stated, “It is our hope that they will become self-reliant by using the skills they have acquired to enhance their livelihood and that of their communities.”

Rev. Emmanuel Obani, Head of the Baptist Vocational Training Centre, praised the MTN Ghana Foundation for its assistance to the graduates. He said, “We are thankful to the MTN Ghana Foundation for supporting our graduates. This timely assistance will greatly benefit the beneficiaries in their career paths.”

The MTN Ghana Foundation is now supporting the reintegration and training of former Trokosi girls for the second time. The Foundation provided training, equipment, and seed money to 15 former Trokosi girls in 2021. More support was given to the girls this year as a result of the initial project’s success.

More than 4 million people in Ghana have benefited from the more than 168 significant projects the MTN Ghana Foundation has carried out in the areas of health, education, and economic empowerment since its founding in 2007.
