MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its support for Girls in ICT. At the climax of the Girls in ICT program this year, which was organized by the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization at the University of Ghana, Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer for MTN Ghana, said this.
MTN Ghana and the Ministry have joined on this effort, according to Ms. Adwoa Wiafe, since it fits with the company’s strategic goals. “We are here to support the Ministry and the program, because it is something that is dear to MTN and these are issues we champion daily. We will continue supporting this program as long as we can.”
“We believe that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life, so connectivity and inclusion are matters that we support. This program is aligned with our belief because of its focus on educating girls in ICT across the country.” she added.
The Girls in ICT program aims to provide girls in elementary schools with computer skills in the areas of coding, website design, game creation, and animation. Since 2021, MTN has provided assistance for the effort and has allocated around GHS15.6 million towards the program. By means of its investments, MTN has played a part in providing fundamental ICT skills training to nine thousand girls and nine hundred teachers, including coding, website design, game creation, and animation.
Adwoa Wiafe also exhorted the girls to make the most of the opportunities provided by the project and to treat the training seriously.
Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Minister for Communications and Digitalization, commended MTN Ghana and all other partners for their support over the years. She appealed to MTN Ghana, current and potential partners to come on board to support the “Girls in ICT initiative”.
Mr. Titus Glover, the Regional Minister for Greater Accra, Hon. Charles Acheampong, the Deputy Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Chief Nii Ahene Nunoo III of the Abola Traditional Area, and other dignitaries were present at the event. A number of activities were held at the event, such as an award ceremony to recognize the top 100 girls who performed very well in the competition.
Teachers and other exceptional people were also recognized with prizes. Plaques, computers, cash prizes, and certificates were among the rewards. In addition, fully functional ICT labs were given to the schools of the top three females.
