“My faith as an Assemblies of God member is against LGBTQ” – Mahama

According to John Dramani Mahama, he is against the promotion of homosexual acts in the nation since it conflicts with his Christian religion and membership in the Assemblies of God Church.

Faith-based groups are strongly in favor of the law that Parliament is considering enacting regarding the activities of the LGBTQ community and individuals in Ghana through a Private Members’ resolution. Still, there are many who disagree with the measure.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at a public forum with the clergy in Koforidua as part of his “Building Ghana Tour,” the former president stated that he is against the act because his faith does not command him to support such.

“My faith as an Assemblies of God member is against LGBTQ. Because the faith I have does not support a man to marry a man and a woman marry a woman,” he indicated.

“I personally believe a man is a man and a woman is a woman. I don’t believe one can get up in a day and opt to change his gender because he feels like, so he’s going to change to become a woman when he has actually been born a man. Nature created us man and woman and God knew what he was doing when he created us like that. So my personal faith is against it,” he noted.

Since its presentation in Parliament, the Promotion of Proper Sexual Rights and Family Values law, often known as the Anti-gay/LGBTQ law, has sparked a number of debates, with many characterizing it as draconian.

The bill would make it illegal to fund, advocate for, or promote homosexuality. It toughens prison sentences, putting advocates for LGBTQ+ people up to ten years behind bars and anyone who identifies as such at three years. Additionally, the bill aims to remove HIV medication and other health services from this community.
