President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assessed his administration’s efforts to modernize Ghana’s legal system and provide access to justice for all citizens today at the Ghana Bar Association’s Annual Conference in Kumasi. He described these improvements as crucial.

Akufo-Addo, who is nearing the end of his term as president, outlined many measures he has taken to improve the legal system’s transparency, decrease inefficiencies, and bolster judicial independence.

He added that the implementation of computerized filing systems throughout the courts was one of the major accomplishments of his administration.

This innovation has replaced outdated paper-based processes with digital platforms, allowing lawyers and litigants to file documents online and receive real-time updates on case proceedings. “This initiative has not only expedited the handling of cases, but it has also enhanced transparency and accountability,” Akufo-Addo said.

In addition, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the construction of a permanent Court of Appeal facility in Kumasi, which is intended to enhance the administration of justice in Ghana’s northern region. The appeals procedure moves more quickly thanks to this facility, which is backed by contemporary justices’ houses. It can handle cases from the Upper West, Upper East, Northern, and other regions more effectively. He was hopeful that the infrastructure in these places will lessen the load on the courts and the litigants.

The President also discussed the massive court construction project of his government in his speech. The program, which was started in 2020, aimed to build 100 additional courthouses around the country in addition to housing for judges.

Twenty-one of the remaining courthouse projects were almost finished as of February 2024, leaving 79 completed and inaugurated. Together with the building of 121 residential units for judges nationwide, these projects represent a major advancement in resolving the long-standing problem of inadequate court infrastructure.

“We have done enough to address the perennial problem of insufficient court infrastructure in Ghana,” declaring his government’s commitment to enhancing access to justice, President Akufo-Addo said.
