Former President John Mahama has voiced his displeasure with the way the allegations of corruption surrounding Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the former minister of sanitation, have turned out.
The Accra Circuit Court heard accusations against two housekeepers who worked for Mrs. Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, for allegedly stealing goods and cash valued at millions of cedis from their Abelemkpe, Accra, home.
The defendants, Patience Botwe, age 18, and Sarah Agyei, age 30, were accused of conspiring to commit a crime and of stealing five times, totaling millions of Ghanaian cedis, US$1 million, and €300,000. The purported pilfers took place between July and October of 2022.
The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice have advised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) not to launch money laundering investigations into the transactions of the former Sanitation Minister in response to the Special Prosecutor’s referral of the case to the EOCO for an investigation into money laundering.
The Attorney General’s office emphasized that being able to demonstrate that financial gains were generated from criminal proceeds originating from illicit activities is crucial to pursuing money laundering investigations.
The Attorney General’s office stated that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was assigned to handle that portion of the case and advised against EOCO looking into Cecilia Dapaah’s financial source.
On the back of this, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress for the 2024 election disapproved of the developments regarding the matter.
Following this, the candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress in the 2024 election expressed disapproval of the developments in this regard.
On Thursday, May 2, he announced on X that his government would resume its probe into the “alleged acts of corruption and graft” in the case of the former Sanitation Minister.
