According to former trade minister Alan Kyerematen, leaving the New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially was not his intention.
Mr. Kyerematen stated that he informed the national chair of his plan to quit when he made his resignation public on Monday, September 25 during a news conference in Accra.
On the New Day show with Berla Mundi on TV3 on September 27, he expressed his extreme disagreement with the way certain experts had described his departure as “clanderstine.”
The NPP has voiced dissatisfaction with the method used by Mr. Kyerematen to leave the party.
At the party’s headquarters on Tuesday, September 26, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong informed reporters that Mr. Kyerematen’s choice to leave without first alerting the party indicated that it was “premeditated”.
Stephen Ayesu Ntim, the national chairman of the party, had visited Mr. Kyerematen before he made his decision on Monday, September 25.
According to reports, the former trade minister assured Mr. Ayesu Ntim of his dedication to the party.
He announced his choice at a news conference, which was a betrayal.
According to Mr. Kodua Frimpong, this is the party’s chance to demonstrate grit and perseverance in front of the 2024 elections.
He exhorted party supporters to stick with the cause and, at this pivotal moment, reiterate their dedication to the party.
Along with leaving the party, Mr. Kyerematen declared his intention to run as an independent for president in the 2024 elections.
He claims that the NPP now bears almost little similarity to the group he joined as a founding member in 1992.
In a statement dated September 5, 2023, Alan Kyerematen, who finished third in the party’s special delegates conference on August 26, announced his choice to withdraw from the NPP Presidential primary scheduled for November 4.
He gave two reasons for withdrawing from the race: the intimidation of his agents and the perception that the campaign has been rigged to favor one of the contenders.
