President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s statement that he would ensure Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia wins the general elections in 2024 appears to have irked former President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Mahama asserts that President Akufo-Addo is incapable of reviving the economy and ensuring that every person has access to decent living circumstances.
He asserted that rather than finding solutions to the dire economic difficulties facing the nation, Akufo-Addo would rather use his position of authority to back Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming general elections.
On Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in Accra, the former president—who is a candidate with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the general elections of 2024 expressed his displeasure to members of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
“He (Akufo-Addo) has run out of ideas on how to solve the economic challenges we find ourselves in. By his recent declaration, his focus and last energy are going to be expended on installing his anointed successor as the next President” Mahama lamented.
“We could have avoided this unpleasant [economic] situation, the signs of these crises were there for all to see…conflicted Finance Minister, whose interest was to borrow recklessly and mire our economy with the quagmire of debt was obvious as far as from 2019” he stated.
In a statement congratulating Dr. Bawumia on winning the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership contest last Saturday, President Akufo-Addo remarked, “You have demonstrated that Ghana’s democracy is safe in your hands.” With the help of Addai-Nimoh, Ken Agyapong, and others, I have no doubt that Mahamudu Bawumia will bring the party together and provide us solid leadership.
Over the past 16 years, the President expressed gratitude to every single member of the NPP.I only need to use all of my might and vigor to support Bawumia in winning the 2024 elections. Ghana cannot afford for the NDC to return, particularly under John Mahama’s leadership. We need to remain together because the election won’t be simple.
